چکیده

Abstract Purpose Diversification practices such as intercropping in woody cropping systems have recently been proposed a promising management strategy for addressing problems related to soil degradation, climate change mitigation and food security. In this study, we assess the impact of several diversification different regimes on main carbon fluxes regulating balance under semiarid Mediterranean conditions. Methods The study was conducted two nearby systems: (i) low input rainfed almond ( Prunus dulcis Mill.) orchard cultivated terraces (ii) levelled intensively irrigated mandarin Citrus reticulata Blanco) with street-ridge morphology. trees were intercropped Capparis spinosa or Thymus hyemalis While mixture barley vetch followed by fava bean. Changes caused crop diversifications C inputs into outputs from estimated. Results Crop did not affect organic stocks but above agroecosystems. perennials low-input system significantly improved annual short-term. However, species managed had effect balance. Conclusions Our results highlight potential through sequestration.

No-tillage increases soil profile carbon and nitrogen under long-term rainfed cropping systems

Emphasis and interest in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) storage (sequestration) in soils has greatly increased in the last few years, especially C with its’ potential to help alleviate or offset some of the negative effects of the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Several questions still exist with regard to what management practices optimize C storage in the soil profile. A long-ter...

Impacts of different tillage practices on some soil microbiological properties and crop yield under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions

Effects of six tillage practices on some soil microbiological properties and crop yields were evaluated for a clay soil (Typic Haploxererts) under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions in a three year study (2006-2009). The experiment was designed as a completely randomized-block with three replications. Treatments were: conventional tillage with residue incorporated (CT1), conventional tillage wi...

Soil physical properties, soil carbon dioxide fluxes, and soil drainage dynamics of select bioenergy cropping systems

Bioenergy cropping systems have been proposed as a way to enhance United States energy security. However, research on soil physical properties, soil-surface CO2 effluxes, and soil drainage dynamics in such systems is needed to ensure environmental sustainability in the field. The objective of our research was to evaluate soil physical properties and conditions as well as soil-surface CO2 efflux...
